چکیده

[1] There is disagreement as to whether shoreline position eventually recovers from large storms. In an earlier paper we showed that statistical modeling of historical shoreline data was improved by including large storms in the model via a transient storm function. Here we show that, at shorter timescales of months to years, modeling of the shoreline at Assateague Island, MD is improved by a storm model with both transient and persistent components. We find that the shoreline recovers from the storm rapidly, almost within a year, but that the recovery is only partial, despite anthropogenic reconstruction of a pre‐existing berm. The long‐term trend of a shoreline (whether erosive, accretive, or stationary) can thus be regarded as the cumulative persistent component of successive storms, although most long‐term data sets are too temporally sparse to make such a parameterization more useful than a steady long‐ term rate. Modeling storms improves estimates of long-term shoreline change

[1] Large storms make it difficult to extract the long-term trend of erosion or accretion from shoreline position data. Here we make storms part of the shoreline change model by means of a storm function. The data determine storm amplitudes and the rate at which the shoreline recovers from storms. Historical shoreline data are temporally sparse, and inclusion of all storms in one model over-fit...

Assessing Embayed Equilibrium State, Beach Rotation and Environmental Forcing Influences; Tenby Southwest Wales, UK

The morphological change of a headland bay beach—Tenby, West Wales, UK—was analysed over a 73-year period (1941–2014). Geo-referenced aerial photographs were used to extract shoreline positions which were subsequently compared with wave models based on storm event data. From the 1941 baseline, results showed shoreline change rates reduced over time with regression models enabling a prediction o...

West Palm Beach (Florida), ISSN 0749-0208. Increasing demands on coastal areas require enhanced understanding of coastal erosion hazards. Here we analyze a 5-km segment of the Kihei coastline (Maui, Hawaii) centered on an area of c...

Process-Based Coastal Erosion Modeling for Drew Point, North Slope, Alaska

A predictive, coastal erosion/shoreline change model has been developed for a small coastal segment near Drew Point, Beaufort Sea, Alaska. This coastal setting has experienced a dramatic increase in erosion since the early 2000’s. The bluffs at this site are 3–4 m tall and consist of ice-wedge bounded blocks of fine-grained sediments cemented by ice-rich permafrost and capped with a thin organi...

The morphodynamic responses of artificial embayed beaches to storm events

The morphological changes caused by storm events in two Barcelona beaches were recorded using video monitoring techniques during the period 2001–2006. Changes in shoreline position and configuration and submerged bar position and shape were analyzed during the 25 major storm events that occurred during the study period. Beach responses to storms were grouped into three categories: shoreline adv...
